US Toughens Emissions Rules to Boost Electric Vehicle Sales

The Biden administration is proposing tougher greenhouse gas emission standards for cars and trucks sold in the US, which could lead to electric vehicles accounting for up to 67% of all new sales by 2032. The proposed standards would reduce the adjusted fleetwide target for light-duty cars and trucks by more than half, to 82 grams per mile fleetwide, by 2032, a reduction of 56%. The change is being driven by states, worldwide efforts to battle climate change, and Biden's own initiatives to encourage consumers to buy electric vehicles and spur domestic battery production and the installation of charging stations.

Biden Administration Proposes Tough New Rules to Accelerate Electric Vehicle Adoption.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed new federal vehicle emissions standards that would significantly reduce climate and other harmful air pollution, unlocking significant benefits for public health, especially in communities that have borne the greatest burden of poor air quality. The proposed standards would avoid nearly 10 billion tons of CO2 emissions, equivalent to more than twice the total US CO2 emissions in 2022, while saving thousands of dollars over the lives of the vehicles meeting these new standards and reduce America’s reliance on approximately 20 billion barrels of oil imports.
