Stunning Image Captures Massive 'Plasma Waterfall' on Sun.

Astronomer Eduardo Poupeau captured a photo of a 100,000 kilometer-high 'plasma waterfall' rising from the surface of the sun. These polar crown prominences are common but not often photographed. Experts warn that if the plasma is blasted away from the sun and hits Earth it could end up knocking out the planet's electricity grid. In rare cases, magnetic forces can also become so strong that the hot plasma erupts away from the sun and into space — in what is called a coronal mass ejection (CME).

Photographer captures rare 60000 mile tall 'plasma waterfall' on the sun.

Astrophotographer Eduardo Schaberger Poupeau captured a stunning image of a plasma waterfall on the sun, believed to be around 60,000-miles-tall, which is eight times the size of Earth. The plasma is falling back down at tremendous speeds of up to 22,370 mph. These structures are called polar crown prominences and are the solar equivalent to Earth's auroras. The sun is nearing a peak of activity, causing remarkable solar events to happen.

Massive Plasma Phenomena Observed on the Sun

Astrophotographer Eduardo Schaberger Poupeau captured an image of a polar crown prominence (PCP), also known as a plasma waterfall, on March 9 using specialized camera equipment. The plasma wall rose 62,000 miles above the solar surface and traveled downwards at speeds of up to 22,370 mph. PCPs occur near the sun's magnetic poles and are of interest to solar physicists and nuclear physicists. PCPs could become more frequent and intense as the sun ramps up to a peak in its 11-year solar cycle known as the solar maximum.
