Doctor burnout leads to overprescribing opioids and antibiotics.

A study by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) center at the University of Manchester found that general practitioners who work long hours and experience burnout are up to five times more likely to prescribe high levels of medications, including opioids and antibiotics. The study showed a higher correlation for GPs located in more deprived areas, with a two times greater risk of overprescribing opioids and a 1.6 times greater risk for antibiotics. The findings suggest that policies are urgently needed to help mitigate burnout in general practice to promote safe and appropriate prescribing strategies and patient safety.

Overuse of antibiotics linked to harmful side effects, study shows.

Over-prescribing and inappropriately prescribing antibiotics can cause negative effects and at times can send patients right back to the hospital, according to a new study by Intermountain Health and Stanford University. The study examined 51 million patient visits over a 15-year period and found that antibiotics were overprescribed 50% of the time, with some of the most harmful antibiotics being pretty commonly used. Experts want to remind people that antibiotics are not always the cure for your sickness and it's important to know that there are options and to listen to your physician.
