Departing Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley delivered a passionate speech, asserting that the US military does not swear an oath to a "wannabe dictator," in an apparent swipe at former President Donald Trump. Milley emphasized that the military takes an oath to the Constitution and the idea of America, and is willing to die to protect it. Milley's relationship with Trump has been contentious, with the former president accusing him of treason. Milley's handling of the January 6 crisis and his alleged phone call to reassure Beijing have also been subjects of debate.
Organizers of King Charles III's coronation ceremony will invite anyone watching, streaming or listening to the service to recite a new "homage of the people" oath, marking the symbolic accession of Britain's new king. It is the first time in history that all royal subjects have been invited to formally participate in a coronation service in such a way, made possible by modern technology. The oath replaces a traditional allegiance pledged by hereditary peers, and is voluntary. The ceremony will also feature female bishops and members of other faiths, and hymns will be sung in Welsh, Scottish and Irish Gaelic.
Newly-appointed NASA officer Makenzie Lystrup took an unconventional oath on a copy of Carl Sagan's book 'Pale Blue Dot' instead of the Bible. The book is inspired by the famous Pale Blue Dot photograph of Earth taken by the Voyager 1 space probe in 1990. Dr Lystrup is now the director of Goddard Space Flight Center, responsible for the oversight and execution of a $4bn portfolio and leading a team of scientists, engineers, and technologists focused on Earth and space science.
Dr. Makenzie Lystrup, the first woman to lead NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, took her oath of office on a copy of Carl Sagan's "Pale Blue Dot" instead of a Bible or other holy book. While it's not uncommon for political figures to use non-traditional texts for their oaths, this is the first time someone has used a Sagan book. The choice is legal and a nod to the late astronomer's influence on space exploration.
