December Skywatching: Meteors, Asteroids, and Planets to Photograph

NASA has provided an update on the astronomical events to observe in December, including the Geminid meteor shower, which is expected to peak overnight. Photographers are advised to find a clear, dark sky and use long exposures to capture the meteors. Other photo opportunities include the crescent Moon rising alongside Venus and Spica, the Moon's close proximity to Saturn, and the alignment of Jupiter and the Moon. "Stunning Perseid Meteor Shower Lights Up Oregon Coast, Joshua Tree, and Seattle"

Portland photographer Jay Shah captured stunning images of the Perseid meteor shower at the Peter Iredale Shipwreck along the northwest Oregon coast. His long exposure shots captured shooting stars, the Milky Way, glowing bioluminescence, and a ship on the horizon resembling a sunset. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecasts clear skies for the meteor shower's peak.
