Fish Consumption in Early Childhood Reduces Developmental Delays

Toddlers who consume fish at least once a week have a reduced risk of neurodevelopmental delays, according to a study involving 142 children. The protective effect of fish consumption on neurodevelopment is enhanced by the diversity of the child's microbiome. The study controlled for various social and environmental factors, highlighting the independent impact of diet, particularly fish consumption, on neurodevelopment. This research provides new insights into the role of diet and microbial diversity in early childhood development.

COVID-19 during pregnancy linked to altered brain development in baby boys.

Boys born to mothers who contracted COVID-19 during pregnancy are nearly twice as likely to be diagnosed with subtle delays in brain development, according to a study of over 18,000 children born at eight hospitals in Eastern Massachusetts. The study found that boys, but not girls, were more likely to be diagnosed with a range of developmental disorders in the first 18 months of life, including delays in speech and language, psychological development, motor function, and intellectual disabilities. The effect from COVID-19 appears to be modest, and most children of moms who have COVID during pregnancy won't have neurodevelopmental consequences even if there is some increase in risk.
