The Recording Academy has announced new rules for the Grammy Awards, including a requirement that "only human creators" can win the music industry's highest honor, in response to the use of artificial intelligence in popular music. The Academy also made changes to other categories, including a new rule that to win a nomination for the album of the year category, a music creator has to account for at least 20% of the work. The number of nominees in the "Big Four" categories has been decreased from 10 to eight, and the best improvised jazz solo award has been renamed best jazz performance.
Grimes is inviting music creators to use AI-generated versions of her voice to make new music, offering to provide raw audio files and split 50% royalties on any successful AI-generated song that uses her voice. She asked creators to register music with her website and requested that they avoid creating objectionable or politically charged content. Polyend has released the Tracker Mini, a portable version of its sampling groovebox, the Tracker. The Mini has a built-in battery, more memory, and a faster CPU than its predecessor, and is capable of holding up to eight minutes of mono samples in its pool. It has eight tracks of audio and/or MIDI, all the same sample editing tools, effects, beat slicing features, granular and wavetable synthesizers, and is capable of building an entire song or even album. The Tracker Mini is available for pre-order for $699 and will start shipping in July.
Thomas Bangalter, one half of the iconic electronic duo Daft Punk, has turned his hand to ballet scoring with his latest project, Mythologies. The ballet premiered in France last year and is now being released as an album. Bangalter's score is a mix of ancient and modern approaches, with each of the 16 separate "frescos" requiring its own musical setting. In a recent interview, Bangalter expressed his concerns about the rise of Artificial Intelligence and the "obsolescence of man". He also revealed that Daft Punk's central thesis was that the line between humanity and technology should remain absolute.
HBO will release a new documentary, "Jason Isbell: Running With Our Eyes Closed," on April 7th, which chronicles the creation of Isbell's 2020 album "Reunions." The film features interviews with Isbell's bandmates, former bandmate Patterson Hood, and his manager Traci Thomas, as well as his wife and creative partner Amanda Shires. Directed by Sam Jones, the documentary touches on Isbell's upbringing, journey to sobriety, and the current state of his marriage.
