Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts has implemented a new policy restricting the availability of general anesthesia for colonoscopy procedures, facing backlash from gastroenterologists who argue that it makes the procedure more difficult and discourages patients from receiving preventative care. The policy, effective as of Jan. 1, states that general anesthesia is not "medically necessary" for certain patients, leading to concerns about delays or abandonment of necessary procedures. The decision has sparked debate over patient access, procedural difficulties, and potential impacts on colon cancer detection and mortality rates.
Marquette University is offering flu vaccinations at several clinics on campus for students, faculty, and staff. Full-time undergraduate students and employees, as well as dependents on Marquette's medical insurance plan, can receive the vaccination for free. For others, the cost is $25. Various clinic dates are available, and appointments can be made if unable to attend. It is advised not to come for the flu vaccine if feeling ill or experiencing COVID-19 symptoms. Marquette Medical Clinic does not administer the COVID-19 vaccine.
Podiatrist Matt Francis has opened Atlantic Podiatry in Bermuda, with a focus on diabetic foot care. He offers diabetic screenings, blood flow and pulse checks, and works with local diabetes clinics to maintain foot health and catch issues before they become serious. Francis is also working on a master's in wound care and tissue viability. He offers a discounted rate for diabetic patients on HIP and does home visits for housebound clients. Francis believes podiatrists are an underutilised resource on the island and could play a much bigger role in preventive care, especially for diabetics.
