"Inauguration of Transgender Women's Mausoleum Amidst Ongoing Killings in Mexico's Capital"

Mexico City has inaugurated a mausoleum dedicated to transgender women, the first of its kind in the country, as a way to provide a dignified resting place for victims of hate crimes. The mausoleum was founded by Kenya Cuevas, an activist who started the organization Casa de Muñecas after her friend, Paola Buenrostro, was fatally shot in 2016. The burial site will accommodate 149 women, including Buenrostro and Indigenous transgender rights activist Guadalupe "Lupilla" Xiu. Mexico currently has the second-highest number of transgender killings in the world, with 25 transgender women slain from January to July 2023.
