"2024 Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab Survey Reveals Mixed Results"

The 2024 Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab Winter Dredge Survey estimates 317 million blue crabs, a slight decrease from last year. Spawning age female crabs dropped to 133 million but remain above the overfishing threshold. Juvenile crab numbers rose to 138 million, though still below average. A new stock assessment will begin this summer to reassess management strategies, with results expected by March 2026.

Black bear captured and released in DC neighborhood.

A large black bear was safely captured and released back into the wild after running loose through backyards in Northeast D.C. The bear was tranquilized and taken to a remote area of Maryland by the Humane Rescue Alliance. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources took custody of the bear. The bear was perched in a tree for a few hours before being sedated and loaded into a steel cage. Cooperation between D.C. police, animal control, and other first responders helped to safely sedate the bear.

Black bears cause chaos in Washington D.C. and Bucks County neighborhoods.

A black bear was tranquilized by the Humane Rescue Alliance after it was found perched in a tree above the 1300 block of Franklin Street in Northeast Washington, D.C. The bear stayed in the tree until about 9:50 a.m. and was successfully tranquilized shortly after 10 a.m. A veterinarian from the National Zoo was on the scene and the Maryland Department of National Resources assisted. Black bear sightings are on the rise in Maryland due to breeding season.
