Mystery surrounds sudden death of Wisconsin's loons.
Dozens of common loons have fallen from the icy skies of northern Wisconsin due to meteorological conditions that cause ice to develop on their bodies, weighing them down and causing them to plummet to the ground. Wildlife experts have rescued more than two dozen of the birds, but are asking residents to stay vigilant for any more grounded loons that have not yet been discovered. Loons are an ancient species of waterfowl that cannot walk on land and need large water bodies to take flight. It's important that anyone who finds a grounded loon consult wildlife officials and not simply place the bird in the nearest pond or small lake.
