Elon Musk and Tesla Break Ground on Texas Lithium Refinery, Signaling Shift to Battery Dominance.
Tesla has broken ground on a lithium refinery in Texas that will produce enough of the battery metal to build about 1 million electric vehicles by 2025, making it the largest North American processor of the material. The move will make Tesla the only major automaker in North America that will refine its own lithium. The facility will use materials that are less harsh on the environment, such as soda ash, and eschew the conventional refining process that relies on sulfuric acid and other strong chemicals.
