"Controversy Surrounding Lithium Extraction from Great Salt Lake and Colorado River"

An Australian company is planning to extract lithium from saline waters in southeast Utah, raising concerns about its potential impact on the Colorado River's water supply. The project aims to produce lithium for electric vehicle batteries using a low-carbon and environmentally responsible extraction process, but local residents and environmentalists are worried about the potential water usage and environmental impact. The company has acquired rights to freshwater from the Green River, leading to questions about the connection between groundwater and river water. The project reflects a broader global effort to ramp up lithium production for renewable energy technologies, but concerns persist about its potential effects on the environment and water resources.

Stellantis Makes Major Investment in US Lithium Project

Automaker Stellantis plans to invest over $100 million in California's Controlled Thermal Resources as part of its commitment to the direct lithium extraction (DLE) sector. The investment aims to secure new sources of lithium for electric vehicle batteries amid concerns of potential supply shortages. Stellantis also plans to triple its lithium purchase from Controlled Thermal, with a previous order of 65,000 metric tons annually for at least 10 years starting in 2027. Controlled Thermal intends to spend over $1 billion to extract lithium from geothermal brines, using renewable power to reduce carbon emissions during production. The company aims to obtain final permits by October and begin construction of a commercial lithium plant soon after.

GM invests $50M in EnergyX for lithium extraction.

General Motors will lead a $50 million funding round for EnergyX, a Texas-based startup developing a more efficient method to extract and process lithium from salt flats. Lithium is a critical component in batteries for electric vehicles. EnergyX's technology can recover 90% or more of the lithium in brine while using much less energy, water and land than existing processes. GM will also help develop EnergyX's technology and will have first right of refusal to buy lithium from any projects developed by the startup.
