Decoding the Enigmatic Green Ghosts of the Sky

Scientists have captured new imagery of atmospheric phenomena known as "ghosts" that occur during some lightning storms. These green-hued wisps, which are difficult to see with the naked eye, were found to be composed of excited oxygen, nitrogen, and iron delivered from space. The discovery of the elemental makeup of these ghosts provides insights into the chemistry and physics of Earth's upper atmosphere. These transient luminous events, including ghosts, are still not well understood, but further research will continue to unravel their mysteries.

Capturing Earth's Lightning: Astronauts Harness New Space Camera

European Space Agency astronaut Andreas Mogensen will use a new camera to study lightning storms on Earth during his six-month mission on the International Space Station. The camera, called a Davis camera, captures up to 100,000 images per second and uses a neuromorphic imaging technique. Mogensen aims to capture detailed images of elusive lightning phenomena such as "blue jets" and "red sprites" to better understand their formation and development. This research also provides an opportunity to analyze the impact of lightning storms on the upper atmosphere and their association with human-induced climate change.

"Lightning Storms Cause NC State's New Scoreboard to Short Out"

The debut of NC State's brand-new scoreboard at Carter-Finley Stadium was short-lived as it shorted out due to nearby lightning storms, causing a delay in the game against Notre Dame. The 166-foot-wide scoreboard, touted as the 11th largest in college football, went black during the delay but has since been restored. Rumors of a lightning strike were denied by NC State. The game resumed play after a condensed halftime due to the lengthy delay.
