Capturing Earth's Lightning: Astronauts Harness New Space Camera

European Space Agency astronaut Andreas Mogensen will use a new camera to study lightning storms on Earth during his six-month mission on the International Space Station. The camera, called a Davis camera, captures up to 100,000 images per second and uses a neuromorphic imaging technique. Mogensen aims to capture detailed images of elusive lightning phenomena such as "blue jets" and "red sprites" to better understand their formation and development. This research also provides an opportunity to analyze the impact of lightning storms on the upper atmosphere and their association with human-induced climate change.
