13-year-old hero swims 4km to rescue family off WA coast

A 13-year-old boy swam 4km through rough, fading-light seas to raise the alarm after his family were swept 4km offshore near Geographe Bay, WA. He spent about two hours with a life jacket before discarding it, then swam the remaining distance to shore. All three were rescued by helicopter and rescue vessel, treated by paramedics, and later discharged, with life jackets credited for their survival.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is participating in the annual Operation Dry Water campaign from July 1 to July 3 to combat impaired boating, with alcohol use being the leading cause of boating accidents and deaths. The campaign aims to educate boaters about the dangers of impaired boating and promote safe practices such as enrolling in boater education courses and wearing life jackets. Last year, 794 impaired operators were removed from waterways nationwide during the Operation Dry Water weekend.

Tragic Kayaking Accidents Claim Lives of Newly Engaged Couples.

A kayaker, Travis Valenti, is presumed dead after his kayak began sinking and he disappeared into near-freezing water while kayaking with his fiancée on Lake Crescent in Olympic National Park in Washington state. Neither of them were wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident. Valenti's fiancée was able to swim to shore to alert staff from the nearby Log Cabin Resort that her partner had become submerged and was struggling to swim back. Rangers searched for Valenti by vessel for more than 2-hours but were unable to locate him.
