Europe's Paradigm Shift: Reusable Spaceships and Strategic Autonomy in Spaceflight

The European Space Agency (ESA) and European spaceflight are undergoing a paradigm shift, with a focus on competition and commercial input. The ESA Council has announced two major projects: a competition for new launch vehicles to follow Ariane 6 and Vega-C, and the development of a new cargo vehicle for transport to and from the International Space Station (ISS) by 2028. The ESA aims to rectify the current "European launcher crisis" and increase cost-effectiveness and resilience. The agency will serve as the anchor customer, and the joint implementation of these projects will be prepared for the next Council Meeting in 2025.

China Tests Giant Moon Rocket Engines at New Site.

China has completed the construction of Asia's largest test stand for liquid-propellant rocket engines in Shaanxi province. The test stand is designed to support a basic thrust of 700 tons and is a big boost to China's liquid rocket engine infrastructure. China has been developing engines capable of 500 tons of thrust as part of its plans to build super heavy-lift rockets for future lunar missions. The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) is developing huge new Long March 9 and Long March 10 series launch vehicles intended for use in deep space exploration, crewed lunar missions and the construction of space infrastructure.

"Space Budget Battles: Mars vs Venus"

The US Space Force has requested $60 million over the next two years for its Tactically Responsive Space program, which aims to demonstrate the capabilities of commercial launch vehicles to deploy small satellites on short notice. The program has been funded by congressional add-ons in the past, and the Space Force budget proposal includes $30 million for tactically responsive space in fiscal year 2024 and $30 million in fiscal year 2025. The program is intended to provide additional resilience in case adversaries attempt to shoot down DoD or commercial satellites providing services to the military.
