Cheetah reintroduction efforts suffer setback with deaths of multiple cubs in India's national parks.

Two more cheetah cubs have died in Kuno National Park, Madhya Pradesh, India, bringing the total number of cheetah deaths to six within the past two months since the translocation of cheetahs from African countries to Kuno. Preliminary investigations indicate that malnutrition may be the cause of death for these cubs. One cub has been rescued and is receiving intensive treatment and close monitoring at Palpur Hospital. The remaining female cheetah, Jwala, is in stable health and under continuous observation. The National Tiger Conservation Authority has constituted a “Cheetah Project Steering Committee” to review the progress of the project.

Female Cheetah Slain by Male Coalition in Kuno National Park, South Africa

A female South African cheetah named Daksha was killed in an infighting with two male cheetahs inside Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. The male coalition, known as the White Walkers, exhibited aggressive behavior towards Daksha, resulting in her death. Cheetahs killing other cheetahs account for 8% of cheetah mortality in the Southern African metapopulation. Kuno has lost three cheetahs since the first batch was released in September 2022.

Translocated South African Cheetah Dies in Kuno National Park.

A six-year-old cheetah named Uday, which was translocated to Madhya Pradesh's Kuno National Park from South Africa, died on Sunday due to unknown reasons. This is the second such incident in almost a month at KNP. The cheetah was found dull with head down during an inspection in the morning, and veterinarians attending him alerted senior officials. Unfortunately, the cheetah passed away around 4 pm.
