Israeli chef Alon Shaya discovered a cookbook in the archives of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, which belonged to a Jewish family who were separated and transported to concentration camps. The cookbook was saved by their non-Jewish cook, Maris, who risked punishment by death. Shaya re-created the recipes and shared them with Steven Fenves, a survivor of Auschwitz, who rediscovered a painful personal connection to his story. Together, they now host donor dinners where the dishes are served, and Fenves speaks, raising more than $300,000 for Holocaust conservation efforts.
