"NASA's Plan for Alerting the Public About an Impending Apocalyptic Event"

NASA has revealed its plans for dealing with an asteroid hurtling towards Earth, including efforts to prevent a collision through deflection missions like the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) and a warning system coordinated by the International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN). The agency's Planetary Defense Coordination Office constantly monitors the skies for potentially hazardous objects and would alert the White House and the public in the event of an impending strike, with international coordination through the United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs if the threat is global.

NASA's Plan to Alert the Public About Impending Apocalyptic Threats

NASA has plans in place through the International Asteroid Warning Network to warn the public in the event of an asteroid hurtling towards Earth. The process involves verifying the threat, sending official alerts to governments and the public, and potentially deflecting or destroying the asteroid depending on the time before impact. While the scenario is not imminent, potential solutions such as setting off nuclear bombs in space have been considered and tested as a means of diverting asteroids from a collision course with Earth.

"NASA and ESA's Joint Plan to Prevent an Asteroid Strike: A Decade in the Making"

NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office, in collaboration with the International Asteroid Warning Network, is tasked with finding, tracking, and assessing the risk associated with potentially hazardous asteroids. In the event of an apocalyptic asteroid strike, a global warning system would be activated to notify the public, with NASA sending out alerts and potentially involving international organizations. While most oncoming asteroids are detected well in advance, NASA is also developing techniques to defend Earth, including deflection and destruction methods, with the goal of finding and addressing potential threats decades or even centuries before impact.

Asteroids to make close passes by Earth and moon this weekend.

An asteroid the size of an airliner, dubbed "city killer," will pass harmlessly between the Earth and the moon on Saturday evening. The asteroid, 2023 DZ2, will pass at a distance of over 100,000 miles, less than half the distance between the Earth and the moon. Astronomers from the International Asteroid Warning Network will be monitoring and learning from this asteroid, which is not on the European Space Agency's risk list.
