Impact of Early Parental Loss on Immune Systems of Spinal Cord Injury Patients

Patients recovering from severe spinal cord injuries are at a higher risk of developing immune deficiencies, known as spinal cord injury-induced immune deficiency syndrome, which can lead to life-threatening infections. The severity of the spinal cord injury directly correlates with the extent of the immune deficiency, further weakening the immune system. Identifying highly immune-suppressed patients and developing new treatments to reduce infection susceptibility could improve patient care.

New insights into rare immune disorder with similarities to AIDS.

Researchers at the National Institutes of Health have conducted an 11-year study on idiopathic CD4 lymphocytopenia (ICL), a rare immune deficiency that leaves people vulnerable to infectious diseases, autoimmune diseases, and cancers. The study found that people with the most severe cases of ICL had the highest risk of acquiring or developing several of the diseases associated with this immune deficiency. The most prevalent opportunistic infections were human papillomavirus-related diseases, cryptococcosis, molluscum contagiosum, and mycobacterial diseases other than tuberculosis. Cancer risk was also higher in individuals with the lowest CD4+ T-cell counts, but the risk of autoimmune disease was lower.

Rabies Claims Lives Despite Treatment: Recent Cases in US and India

An 84-year-old man from Minnesota has become the first person in the Western Hemisphere to die from rabies despite receiving post-exposure treatment. The man was bitten by a bat and received timely and appropriate care, including a series of vaccinations and human rabies immunoglobulin injections. However, he died within 15 days of experiencing severe pain on the right side of his face, which progressed to numbness in his face and right hand, accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. The man had an unrecognized immune deficiency that probably contributed to the failure of the treatment.

Two Fatal Cases of Rabies Reported in US and India.

An 84-year-old man from Minnesota became the first reported fatality due to rabies in the United States despite receiving appropriate post-exposure prophylaxis. The man woke up with a rabid bat biting his right hand and was administered appropriate care, which included rabies post-exposure prophylaxis. However, about five months after the exposure, the patient started to have severe pain on the right side of his face, with excessive right eye tearing. His symptoms progressed to facial numbness, trouble swallowing, and right arm numbness associated with nausea and vomiting. The man was hospitalized about a week after first developing symptoms when he complained of worsening facial pain and difficulty swallowing. He subsequently died 15 days after developing symptoms of rabies. The authors concluded that the patient had a fatal outcome because his immune system could not mount a protective antibody response after receiving vaccine prophylaxis to prevent rabies, presumably because of undiagnosed MGUS that suppressed his immune system.
