Impact of Early Parental Loss on Immune Systems of Spinal Cord Injury Patients

Patients recovering from severe spinal cord injuries are at a higher risk of developing immune deficiencies, known as spinal cord injury-induced immune deficiency syndrome, which can lead to life-threatening infections. The severity of the spinal cord injury directly correlates with the extent of the immune deficiency, further weakening the immune system. Identifying highly immune-suppressed patients and developing new treatments to reduce infection susceptibility could improve patient care.
