ICMR Warns of Rising Health Risks from Excess Salt Intake in India
India faces a high salt intake, with urban consumption averaging 9.2 grams daily, double the WHO recommendation, increasing health risks. The ICMR has launched a three-year study in Punjab and Telangana to promote low-sodium salt substitutes and community-led counseling to reduce salt intake and improve heart health. Challenges include limited availability and higher costs of low-sodium salt, but awareness campaigns aim to encourage healthier choices and integrate dietary counseling into public health efforts.
