"Unveiling the Mystery of Hammerhead Shark Embryos"

Scientists have gained rare access to the development of hammerhead shark embryos, shedding light on the mystery of their unique heads. Unlike most shark species, hammerheads gestate their pups in utero, with up to 16 embryos nourished by umbilical cords before live birth. By salvaging embryos from deceased adult female sharks, researchers were able to document the entire set of developmental stages, creating a visual growth chart and uncovering insights into the evolution of these peculiar sharks.

Pregnant Hammerhead Shark's Death Linked to Fishing.

A 14-foot great hammerhead shark washed up on an Alabama beach and researchers later found out the dead shark was pregnant with 40 pups. Researchers suspect the shark died from fishing mortality as great hammerheads are especially prone to the physiological effects of capture stress, more so than most other shark species. Officials with the school removed fin clips from the mother shark and each of the pups for research purposes. The pups will be preserved and donated to local classrooms for educational purposes.
