Governors Island to Host Revolutionary Climate Center
Stony Brook University will lead the New York Climate Exchange, a 400,000-square-foot climate change research and education hub on Governors Island, set to open in 2028. The hub will host academics working on climate projects, students of all ages for educational programs and workforce training, and an incubator program for up to 30 businesses each year. The project will transform a southern chunk of the island and is expected to usher in more frequent ferry service along with new open space for the public. The center will cost about $700 million, with $150 million committed from the city and Trust, $50 million from Bloomberg Philanthropies, plus $100 million from the Simons Foundation.
