MEPs Vote for Sanctions on Azerbaijan, but EU Holds Back
The European Parliament is expected to call for sanctions against Azerbaijan over the seizure of Nagorno-Karabakh, but EU countries are unlikely to comply due to Azerbaijan's lobbying power and crucial gas reserves. While European politicians often express symbolic support for Armenia, Azerbaijan's hard power and gas resources make it a more attractive partner for the EU. The power to impose sanctions lies with member countries, and they are unlikely to upset Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev. Despite some concerns expressed by EU figures, Brussels is torn between its values and the benefits of partnership with Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan's lobbying efforts, including recruiting former high-profile personalities from EU governments, have been successful in influencing European lawmakers. Armenia, on the other hand, has invested fewer resources in its influence strategy. The EU is currently clinging to its role as a mediator in the conflict, but peace talks remain distant.
