"Fast Fashion Workers Struggle for Fair Wages, Face Starvation"

Garment workers in Bangladesh, who produce clothes for UK high-street brands, are facing starvation and resorting to stealing and scavenging food due to low wages. Tens of thousands of workers have engaged in violent protests demanding a higher minimum wage, with one worker reportedly killed. The proposed new minimum wage of 12,500 taka (£92) is significantly lower than the 23,000 taka (£170) demanded by workers' unions. Many fashion brands have expressed support for higher wages, but labor rights groups argue that concrete action, such as paying factories and workers fair prices, is necessary for meaningful change.

While the Accord has raised awareness around the safety of garment workers in Bangladesh, the industry continues to fall short on other matters, such as paying people enough to reach the living wage threshold. Sustainable and fair production in the fashion industry is being called for by numerous organizations, including Fashion Revolution and Human Rights Watch.
