Hubble Captures LMC's Dramatic Encounter with the Milky Way

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has captured the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) surviving a close encounter with the Milky Way, despite losing most of its gaseous halo. This event, known as ram-pressure stripping, left the LMC with a halo about 10 times smaller than those of similar galaxies, yet still capable of star formation. The study, utilizing Hubble's unique ultraviolet capabilities, provides insights into galactic interactions and the early universe. Future research will explore the collision zone between the LMC's and Milky Way's halos.
