Why Aren't Safety Devices Standard on All Guns?

Despite the potential of magazine disconnects to prevent accidental gun deaths, most firearms lack this safety feature due to legal protections for gun manufacturers and changing consumer preferences. The 2005 federal liability shield limits lawsuits against gunmakers, reducing pressure to adopt safety features. While some states like California mandate such features, legal challenges and industry resistance persist. Supreme Court Upholds Biden's 'Ghost Gun' Regulations

The Supreme Court has allowed the Biden administration to enforce regulations aimed at regulating "ghost guns" - firearm-making kits that can be assembled at home. The regulations require manufacturers and sellers of these kits to obtain licenses, conduct background checks, and mark the products with serial numbers. The court's decision, with a 5-4 vote, temporarily puts on hold a ruling by a federal judge in Texas that blocked the regulations nationwide. The Biden administration argues that ghost guns pose a major threat to public safety, while opponents claim that the regulations infringe on the rights of law-abiding citizens to make firearms for personal use. The Supreme Court's conservative majority has previously supported gun rights, and in the upcoming term, they will consider a case on the scope of the Second Amendment in relation to domestic violence.

Record-Breaking Number of Guns Seized at Airports on Busiest Travel Day

A loaded gun was seized at Pittsburgh International Airport on the busiest day in TSA history. The incident involved a man from Lima, Ohio, who attempted to bring a loaded 9mm handgun in his carry-on backpack. The TSA screened over 2.8 million travelers that day, the highest volume since its establishment in 2001. This year is on track to surpass the number of loaded guns found in 2021 and 2022 at the airport, with 21 already confiscated in 2023. Travelers are reminded to familiarize themselves with proper firearm packing procedures and to never bring firearms in carry-on luggage.
