Intel has revealed details about its upcoming Falcon Shores chip for artificial intelligence (AI) computing, which will have 288 gigabytes of memory and support 8-bit floating point computation. The chip is set to be released in 2025 as part of Intel's strategy shift to compete against Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices. Intel's previous competitor to Nvidia, Ponte Vecchio, suffered years of delays, leaving Intel with essentially no market share in the AI chip market.

Intel is using the ISC High Performance supercomputing conference to lay out a fresh roadmap for HPC customers. The company is explaining some of the hardware development decisions it has made this year, including the pivot on Falcon Shores, transforming it from XPU into a pure GPU design, as well as more high-level details of what will eventually become Intel’s next HPC-class GPU. Intel is also offering an update on Aurora, its Sapphire Rapids with HBM + Ponte Vecchio based supercomputer for Argonne National Laboratory.

Intel is shifting its strategy to compete against Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices, which currently lead the market in AI chips. Intel's Falcon Shores chip is part of the company's efforts to catch up to its competitors after its previous chip, Ponte Vecchio, suffered years of delays.
