"Rising Incidence of Deadly Fungus with 20% Kill Rate in Unexpected US Locations"

A study suggests that blastomycosis, a deadly fungus with a 20% kill rate, may be more common in the US than previously thought, with Vermont showing a higher rate than four of the five states where it is tracked. The disease, caused by breathing in spores from rotten wood or leaf litter, can lead to deadly pneumonia and inflammation. The findings challenge assumptions about the disease's prevalence and call for increased awareness among clinicians. Last year, a paper mill outbreak in Michigan sickened over a hundred people, and a woman in Wisconsin died from the infection after being initially misdiagnosed.

The Spread of Deadly Fungal Infection Raises Alarms Nationwide.

New York had a record-high of 379 confirmed cases of the drug-resistant and deadly fungus, Candida auris, last year, surpassing the previous statewide record of 291 in 2021. The fungus has infected people in at least 28 states and has already caused at least 72 new cases this year in New York. Candida auris is most deadly in close-quartered settings such as hospitals or nursing homes, and it is resistant to some anti-fungal drugs. The fungus secrets a sticky substance, called a biofilm, that prevents anti-fungal drugs from working, and it can cause sepsis and organ failure if it gets into the blood.
