The End of COVID-19 Public Health Emergency: What You Need to Know.

The federal COVID-19 Public Health Emergency is set to end on May 11, which means the CDC will have less authority to collect certain types of public health data. City mobile testing sites will no longer be available, but vaccination, testing, and treatment will still be available by appointment at NYC Health + Hospitals locations. Access to COVID-19 vaccinations and certain treatments will not be impacted, but payment, coverage, and access may be affected once the federal government stops purchasing or distributing vaccines and treatments. Some COVID-19 data reporting and surveillance will change, and the FDA will have limited ability to detect shortages of essential medical product shortages.

The Importance of Imaginary Numbers in Quantum Physics Modeling

Theoretical physicists build models of reality, some of which turn out to be right, while others do not. There are two kinds of model building: descriptive models based on available data and speculative models that try to predict the way of the world when data is scarce. A healthy scientific enterprise requires a dynamic balance between theory and experiment. Too much theory without data leads to a fog of models and idealizations that seldom have much to say about the world we live in, while too much data without theory leads to confusion. The better the balance between speculative thinking and data gathering, the healthier the science that comes out.
