Celebrating ten years since LIGO's groundbreaking detection of gravitational waves, scientists highlight ongoing advancements and future plans, including larger observatories like the Cosmic Explorer and upgrades to existing facilities, to deepen our understanding of black holes and the universe, despite funding uncertainties.
The MIT-led Cosmic Explorer project has received $9 million in funding from the National Science Foundation to design a next-generation gravitational-wave observatory. Cosmic Explorer aims to detect gravitational waves from the early universe and will feature detectors that are 10 times larger than those of the current Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO). The observatory is expected to increase the rate of gravitational wave detections and provide insights into the formation of black holes and neutron stars, as well as the history of the universe. The project will involve collaboration with other next-gen detectors globally.
