"Camera Giants Launch Watermark Tech to Combat AI-Generated Image Fakes"

Major camera manufacturers Nikon, Sony, and Canon are set to integrate the Content Authenticity Initiative's (CAI) C2PA digital signature system into their cameras by 2024, with the aim of combating AI-generated images and ensuring the authenticity of photographs. This system will allow verification of an image's provenance, but it is not designed to detect AI-generated images directly. The CAI's Verify system, which is a web application, can show the provenance of an image if it has the correct digital signature. However, the effectiveness of this initiative is limited by the need for widespread adoption by camera makers and the cooperation of social media platforms, which have not yet shown significant interest in the CAI's efforts. The CAI's vision is to create a future where all images have embedded metadata for provenance checking, promoting digital literacy among consumers to verify content credentials.
