Swiss Glaciers Experience Alarming 10% Volume Loss in Two Years

Swiss glaciers have lost 10% of their volume in just two years due to climate breakdown caused by the burning of fossil fuels, resulting in unusually hot summers and winters with low snow volume. The volume lost during the hot summers of 2022 and 2023 is equivalent to that lost between 1960 and 1990. The Swiss Academy of Sciences reported a 4% decline in glacier volume this year, the second-largest annual decline on record. Some glaciers have lost so much ice that measurements have been halted, and experts predict that even if warming is limited to 1.5C above preindustrial levels, only a third of glacier volume in Switzerland will remain. The melting ice is leading to the formation of new lakes, bare rock, and the recovery of long-lost bodies.

Record-breaking Heatwave: Hottest Summer in History

This summer has been confirmed as the hottest on record, with June to August being the warmest period since 1940. The global average temperature was 0.66 degrees Celsius above the 1990 to 2020 average, breaking the previous record set in 2019. The Northern Hemisphere experienced deadly heatwaves and unprecedented ocean temperatures, while countries in the Southern Hemisphere also saw well-above average temperatures. The Copernicus data highlights the urgent need to address climate change, as these extreme weather events and rising temperatures are a preview of what the world can expect at 1.5 degrees of warming.

Climate Crisis: World to Exceed 1.5C Threshold Within Next Decade

The world is likely to experience new record temperatures in the next five years, with temperatures rising by more than 1.5C above pre-industrial levels, according to research from the World Meteorological Organisation. While the breaching of the crucial 1.5C threshold should be only temporary, it would represent a marked acceleration of human impacts on the global climate system, and send the world into “uncharted territory”. The report found there was a 66% likelihood of exceeding the 1.5C threshold in at least one year between 2023 and 2027.
