"European Debris Removal Mission Foiled by Colliding Debris"

The European Space Agency (ESA) has revealed that the target of its debris cleanup mission, a payload adapter called Vespa, may have been damaged by debris impact. The ESA-backed mission, called ClearSpace-1, aims to remove the Vespa adapter from orbit. The incident is ironic as the debris originated from Vespa itself. ESA is currently evaluating the impact of the debris on the ClearSpace-1 mission, which is scheduled to launch in 2026. ESA has made space safety and mitigating orbital debris a priority, and recently unveiled plans for a "Zero Debris Charter" to prevent the creation of new debris in Earth orbit.

Clearspace-1: A Victim of Its Own Mission

The target for the European Space Agency's ClearSpace-1 mission, a planned test mission to remove a leftover rocket adapter from low Earth orbit in 2026, has been struck by space debris. The 18th Space Defense Squadron of the U.S. Space Force detected new pieces of debris near the adapter, likely resulting from a collision with a small, untracked object. The incident highlights the importance of the ClearSpace-1 mission in addressing the threat posed by larger objects of space debris. Evaluations are ongoing to determine the impact on the mission, which aims to rendezvous, capture, and remove the adapter using a spacecraft from ClearSpace.

ClearSpace-1 Mission Identifies Nearby Objects for Debris Removal

New objects have been detected in the vicinity of a payload adapter named VESPA, which is the target of the upcoming ClearSpace-1 debris removal mission. The debris is believed to originate from the VESPA adapter, but the main object remains intact and has experienced no significant alteration to its orbit. The development of the ClearSpace-1 mission will continue as planned while additional data is collected. This event highlights the importance of debris removal to minimize the risk of fragmentation and damage to active satellites.

2026 set for major space debris cleanup mission.

Swiss startup ClearSpace plans to launch its "active debris removal mission" aboard an Arianespace Vega-C rocket in the first half of 2026. The mission, known as ClearSpace-1, aims to rendezvous, capture, and remove a piece of space debris left behind by a Vega rocket launch in 2013. The European Space Agency is funding the mission, which will demonstrate the spacecraft's technologies and quartet of robotic arms, opening the way for more challenging missions with multiple captures per flight.
