Collision Solved the Mystery of the Geminid Meteor Shower.
NASA scientists have used data from the Parker Solar Probe to determine that the Geminid meteor shower, which originates from asteroid 3200 Phaeton, was likely formed by a catastrophic event such as a collision or explosion that broke apart a much larger body, possibly a comet. The mass of the Geminids is estimated to be on the order of or larger than that of the parent body, which suggests the stream was formed in a possibly catastrophic event that shed a large amount of mass in a relatively short period of time approximately 2,000 years ago.
