Urgent Climate Warning: Carbon Budget Nearly Exhausted, Extreme Weather Expected

Scientists warn that the world's remaining carbon budget to stay below 1.5°C of global warming will be exhausted within two years at current emission rates, making it increasingly likely that the 1.5°C target will be breached, which would lead to severe climate impacts. Urgent and substantial emissions cuts are essential to avoid catastrophic climate consequences, with current efforts still falling short.

Earth's Climate Crisis: Urgent Action Needed to Prevent Key Warming Threshold by 2029

A new study warns that the carbon budget for limiting global warming to 1.5°C will be exhausted before 2030 if current emission rates continue. The risk of climate catastrophes, such as coral reef loss, irreversible ice sheet melting, water shortages, heatwaves, and extreme weather-related deaths, increases beyond this temperature limit. The study attributes the accelerated timeline to progress in reducing aerosol pollution, which slightly cools the planet but masks the effects of burning fossil fuels. While the world has approximately six years left in the carbon budget, starting from January 2023, the study suggests that if emissions are not significantly reduced by then, it may be too late to achieve the 1.5°C target. However, the authors emphasize that running out of the carbon budget does not mean the only time left to address global warming, as efforts to limit warming to 1.6 or 1.7 degrees are still crucial.

Balancing Climate Missions: Earth's Race Against Key Thresholds

A new study warns that the world will likely exceed the internationally agreed temperature limit for global warming by early 2029 if it continues burning fossil fuels at the current rate. The study attributes the accelerated timeline to progress made in cleaning up aerosol pollution, which slightly cools the planet but masks the effects of burning coal, oil, and natural gas. The study calculates the remaining "carbon budget" and sets it at 250 billion metric tons, leaving only five years and a couple of months to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius since pre-industrial times, as outlined in the 2015 Paris agreement.

"Earth's Looming Warming Threshold Breach: Scientists Predict Early 2029"

A new study suggests that by early 2029, the Earth will likely breach the key warming threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) if the current rate of fossil fuel consumption continues. The study calculates the remaining "carbon budget" and indicates that the world has approximately five years left to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The risks of catastrophic consequences, such as coral reef loss, irreversible ice sheet melting, water shortages, heatwaves, and extreme weather-related deaths, increase beyond this threshold. The study attributes the accelerated timeline to progress in reducing aerosol pollution, which slightly cools the planet but masks the effects of greenhouse gas emissions. While achieving the 1.5-degree limit is technically possible, it remains politically challenging.

Study estimates $170tn in climate reparations owed by high-emitting rich countries to poorer nations.

Rich industrialised countries responsible for excessive levels of greenhouse gas emissions could be liable to pay $170tn in climate reparations by 2050 to ensure targets to curtail climate breakdown are met, according to a new study. The compensation system is based on the idea that the atmosphere is a commons, a natural resource for everyone which has not been used equitably. The proposed compensation would be paid to historically low-polluting developing countries that must transition away from fossil fuels despite not having yet used their “fair share” of the global carbon budget.
