Trump State Department Official Sentenced to Nearly 6 Years for Assault on Capitol

Federico Klein, a former Trump political appointee and Marine Corps veteran, has been sentenced to nearly six years in prison for assaulting police officers during the January 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol. Klein repeatedly attacked officers, urged other rioters to join the fray, and tried to prevent police from closing entrance doors. Prosecutors argued that Klein's participation in the riot was motivated by a desire to keep his job as a presidential appointee. Klein, who worked in the State Department, was sentenced to five years and 10 months in prison, along with a fine and restitution.

"Trump Appointee Receives 6-Year Sentence for Assaulting Capitol Officers on Jan. 6"

Federico Klein, a former Donald Trump political appointee at the State Department, has been sentenced to 70 months in prison for storming the Capitol and assaulting law enforcement officers on January 6. Klein, who was convicted of eight felonies and misdemeanor offenses, had been seeking continued employment as a political appointee. He was the subject of a government request for a 10-year prison term. Klein's actions included wedging a police riot shield in between doors to allow rioters to continue their assaults on police. This is one of the longest sentences handed out in connection with the January 6 attack, with over 1,100 people arrested and more than 400 receiving terms of incarceration.

Sentencing of Former Proud Boys Leader Delayed in Jan. 6 Attack Case

The sentencing of former Proud Boys chairman Enrique Tarrio and his associate Ethan Nordean, who were convicted for their roles in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, has been postponed. Prosecutors are seeking 33 years in prison for Tarrio and 27 years for Nordean, the longest sentences yet for individuals charged in connection with the attack. The government is asking the judge to apply a "terrorism enhancement" to label their actions as domestic terrorism. Three other Proud Boys members will be sentenced separately. Prosecutors argue that the group intentionally positioned themselves as a violent force and brought that violence to the Capitol to change the course of American history. The defense argues for more lenient sentences, claiming their actions were protected political speech.
