"Potential Toxicity Lurking in East Palestine Homes Despite Previous Clearances"

After a train derailment and toxic spill in East Palestine, Ohio, last year, residents were told their homes were clear of toxins, but it turns out that the handheld devices used for the screening couldn't detect one of the main chemicals spilled from the train — butyl acrylate — at levels that could irritate the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. Case studies of people exposed to butyl acrylate in previous spills have raised questions about potential longer-term health problems. Despite ongoing testing showing that people are not currently being exposed to chemicals from the derailment in their homes, there are concerns about the accuracy of the screening process and the potential health effects of the exposure.

Chemical Spills Prompt Drinking Water Warnings in Philly and Delaware River.

Philadelphia officials advised residents to switch to bottled water Sunday afternoon to avoid ingesting chemicals spilled into a tributary of the Delaware River in Bucks County Friday night. The water department closed intakes at its Baxter Drinking Water Treatment Plant on the Delaware River, following Friday night’s spill of more than 8,000 gallons of a latex-finishing solution into Otter Creek in Bristol Borough. Among the chemicals released into Otter Creek is butyl acrylate, which was one of the chemicals released in the East Palestine train derailment. The health risks associated with the chemicals were “very low,” and there is no concern related to skin exposure.
