"Chancellor Scholz's Symbolic Hanukkah Lighting Promotes Solidarity with Jewish Community"
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz lit the first candle of Hanukkah on a large menorah at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate, expressing his support for the Jewish people and condemning the recent Hamas terror attack on Israel. The ceremony took place amidst a rise in anti-Semitic crimes in Germany, with Berlin reporting 1,372 crimes with an anti-Israel context and 133 crimes with an anti-Palestinian connection since the start of the Israel-Hamas war. Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner also highlighted the historical significance of the location, reminding attendees of the Nazi persecution of Jews during Kristallnacht.
