John Oliver's Campaign Crowns Pūteketeke as New Zealand's 'Bird of the Century'
The Australasian crested grebe, also known as the pūteketeke or the 'puking' bird, has been crowned New Zealand's Bird of the Century in a poll that received over 290,000 votes. Comedian and talk show host John Oliver championed the bird, which is known for its unique appearance, adorable parenting style, and propensity for regurgitation. The kiwi came in second place, followed by the kea. The annual competition aims to raise awareness about New Zealand's native birds, many of which are threatened or extinct. The pūteketeke's numbers have been slowly increasing, making it a successful ambassador for all New Zealand birds.
