Federal investigators return to U.P. to trace origin of massive fungal outbreak.
Federal health and safety officials are investigating the source of a rare fungal infection outbreak that has infected 104 people, including employees, contractors, and visitors, connected to the Billerud Paper Mill in Escanaba, Michigan. The mill has been idled since April 14 for deep cleaning and inspection, and federal officials are interviewing hundreds of employees to uncover patterns that could help identify the source of the infections. Blastomycosis is a rare infection caused by the fungus Blastomyces, and is treatable with antifungal medicine, but can cause severe illness if left untreated.
