Lane County in Oregon is experiencing a syphilis epidemic with a 102% increase in cases between 2021 and 2022. The exact cause of the increase is unknown, but specific groups such as older millennials and members of the LGBTQ community are at higher risk. Females are also increasingly affected, leading to more cases of congenital syphilis. Health officials are reaching out to community organizations to increase the supply of Bicillin, the main treatment for syphilis, and advise frequent checkups for those with a change in sexual partners or in open relationships.
