Massive Ground Beef Recall: Over 160,000 Pounds Pulled for E. Coli Risk

Wolverine Packing Co. is recalling nearly 170,000 pounds of ground beef distributed to restaurants nationwide due to potential E. coli contamination, as reported by the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service. The recall follows illnesses reported by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, with samples testing positive for E. coli. Affected products have a 'use by' date of Nov. 14, 2024, and restaurants are advised to discard them. E. coli can cause severe gastrointestinal symptoms and, in rare cases, kidney failure.

E. coli concerns prompt beef recall in 9 states.

Elkhorn Valley Packing has recalled 3,436 pounds of boneless beef chuck product over concerns it may be contaminated with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O103. The affected beef was packed on Feb. 16 and shipped to nine states, including Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. The USDA advises the safe preparation of fresh and frozen raw meat products, adding that ground beef should only be consumed if cooked to 160 degrees Fahrenheit. So far, there have been no confirmed reports of illness or other adverse reactions.
