Senior Russian GRU official shot in Moscow; Kremlin accuses Kyiv
Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev, the first deputy head of Russia’s GRU, was shot several times in a Moscow apartment building and hospitalized; Russia opened a criminal case for attempted murder and, through its foreign ministry, described the attack as an act of terrorism attributed to Kyiv, though investigators have yet to publicly link Ukraine. The incident, part of a string of killings of senior Russian military figures, comes as Putin was briefed and talks among Russian, Ukrainian, and US negotiators in Abu Dhabi were wrapping up. Alekseyev, who has led GRU operations since 2011, has been implicated in intelligence support for Moscow’s war against Ukraine and other actions tied to Russia’s military activities.
