London arrest linked to Churchill statue vandalism and Palestine Action support

A 38-year-old man in London was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated criminal damage after defacing Winston Churchill’s statue in Parliament Square and was later arrested on suspicion of supporting Palestine Action, potentially the first such arrest since a High Court ruled the government’s ban on the group unlawful; the Home Office has permission to appeal. The graffiti branded Churchill a “Zionist war criminal” and included calls like “Free Palestine,” with responsibility claimed by the group Free the Filton 24. Israel Pushes to Label UNRWA as Terrorist Organization

The Knesset has passed a preliminary bill designating the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) as a terrorist organization, citing evidence of its employees' links to Hamas. The bill will also abolish the immunities and privileges of UNRWA employees, and if it passes the final reading, Israel will cease all ties with the agency and close its assets in Israeli territory. This move follows discoveries of Hamas tunnels and weapons in UNRWA facilities and allegations of incitement to violence in UNRWA schools.

Supreme Court Upholds Protections for Internet Companies and Speech Moderation Online.

The court also shielded Twitter from litigation seeking to apply the Anti-Terrorism Act that enables Americans to recover damages related to "an act of international terrorism." Families of people killed by Islamist gunmen overseas had sued to try to hold internet companies liable because of the presence of militant groups on their platforms or for recommending their content.

Tunisian Journalists and Opposition Leaders Face Prison Sentences.

A Tunisian appeals court has sentenced radio journalist Khalifa Guesmi to five years in prison for disclosing information about the country's security services. Guesmi was found guilty of intentionally disclosing "information relating to operations of interception, infiltration, audiovisual surveillance or data collection". The sentence was denounced by several local and international rights groups and labour organisations as a "major setback for the judicial system" and a "flagrant attack on the freedom of the press". The decline in civic freedoms in Tunisia has been criticised since the president, Kais Saied, launched a sweeping power-grab in July 2021.
