Rights Abuses Surge in Uganda Due to Anti-LGBTQ Law
Rights groups report a surge in human rights abuses against LGBTQ individuals in Uganda since the enactment of the Anti-Homosexuality Act (AHA) in May. The law, which includes the death penalty for certain same-sex acts, has radicalized the public and led to a climate of fear and intimidation. Private individuals are identified as the main perpetrators of abuses, including torture, rape, arrest, and eviction. State actors are responsible for a smaller percentage of violations compared to previous years. The report also highlights instances of forced anal examinations conducted by the police. The law has faced international condemnation, with the United States imposing travel restrictions on Ugandan officials and the World Bank pausing project financing to the country.
