The Growing Threat of Mosquitoes in a Changing Climate
Ankle biter mosquitoes, also known as Aedes aegypti, are on the rise in San Diego County. These mosquitoes, originally from Africa, have spread worldwide and are known for their love of temperate zones and biting low to the ground. They can bite multiple times in one sitting and are capable of carrying diseases like yellow fever, Zika, and West Nile Virus. Ecologists are concerned about disease transmission but so far, there have been no reports in San Diego. The best way to prevent mosquito bites is to remove standing water and use repellent or cover up when necessary. The mosquitoes will be active for a few months until cooler weather slows them down.
