Weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy, which are also used to treat type 2 diabetes, could cause complications for patients under anesthesia. These drugs slow digestion, leading to delayed stomach emptying, which can result in patients having full stomachs while sedated. This increases the risk of food or liquid being inhaled into the lungs, a dangerous condition known as aspiration. The American Society of Anesthesiologists has issued guidance recommending that patients stop using these drugs prior to procedures or surgeries to mitigate the risk of complications.
